As parents, we try our best to ensure the health and safety of our children. As much as we try to keep them safe, we may not always have the knowledge needed to do so. One thing that we can do for our kids is double check that their car seat or booster seat is safe. However, just because we buckle them up every car ride doesn’t necessarily mean that they are as protected as they can be.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3 out of 4 car seats are not installed properly. This means that a large number of kids are not protected from a potential accident. There are a number of things that can be incorrectly adjusted in car seats, such as loose harness straps, wrong chest clip placement, or the incorrect usage of seat belt path. Unfortunately, we will not always know how to fix things like this.

Thankfully, there are resources out there to help us make sure that our little ones are protected. We have a great program here in the borderland to help with that. El Paso residents can get their child’s car seat checked out for free by the El Paso Fire Department. This service includes having the car seat checked by a nationally-certified safety technician. You and your child can check out the fire trucks at the station while their car seat is being inspected!
