One of the many great things about El Paso is that we are so close to the beautiful state of New Mexico. There are many fun getaway spots in the “Land of Enchantment.” However, the one location I believe to be the most underrated is Las Cruces, NM.
From rich history to beautiful desert landscapes, the famous farmer’s markets to national parks and monuments, Las Cruces has a lot to offer and is only a 45-minute drive from the Sun City.
On a recent trip, my family and I enjoyed a relaxing Sunday evening adventuring around the humble home of the NMSU Aggies. Here’s what we did.
1. Tony Gomez Park
We started off our visit by taking our daughter to Tony Gomez Park for some fresh air and fun.
After a few hours of quality family time and wishing on dandelions, we then found a quaint authentic Mexican restaurant for dinner nearby.
2. Las Trancas Restaurant
Las Trancas Restaurant in Las Cruces is a family-owned and operated business since 1996. They have a variety of delicious plates to choose from on their menu. My husband ordered the carne adovada stuffed sopapilla. It was served with rice and beans and smothered in spicy green chile sauce. Our daughter enjoyed some home-style chicken nuggets and fries. And I devoured their famous albóndigas stew. The staff was attentive, and we enjoyed our experience so much that we plan to return in the future.
3. Caliches Frozen Custard
And last but definitely not least, we headed over to one of our absolute favorite spots in LC for something sweet. Caliches Frozen Custard is famous for its yummy frozen treats. My husband and I split an apple pie a la moore and a rocky road. Our little one enjoyed a kiddie sundae. Their staff is always friendly. And wait times are never too long.
This lovely evening in Las Cruces only confirmed that it is a southern New Mexico hidden gem. It doesn’t get nearly enough credit for its beauty and amazing food. Next time you want a quick and easy getaway, take a trip to Las Cruces and see for yourself.

And of course, White Sands National Park is so close to Las Cruces. So don’t miss that beautiful gem.
We’d love to know. What are your favorite things to do in LC?
