When most people think of spectacular fall colors, West Texas is probably not the first place that comes to mind. But you’d be surprised at how many beautiful changing fall leaves you can catch a glimpse of close to home.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park
1 hour, 45 min from El Paso
One of the most colorful displays of autumn color in all of Texas is in the Guadalupe Mountains. McKittrick Canyon from mid-October to Mid-November is where you’ll want to set your sights. Ruidoso, NM
2 hours, 25 min from El Paso
To catch that fall color, hike the Ruidoso River Trail. It’s a paved, 1¼-mile, one-way trail perfect for all skill levels. You’ll see cottonwoods, oak, and elm trees. And the roads around the Inn of the Mountains Gods are loaded with fall color if you’re looking for a scenic drive. To see aspens, head to Ski Apache for a hike or scenic gondola ride. Cloudcroft, NM
1 hour, 50 min from El Paso
It’s no secret that Cloudcroft provides a refreshing reprieve from the desert below. But did you know it’s also a great place to spy fall leaves? The yellow aspens in mid-October are simply a delight. The forest service even leads guided drives (you drive your own car) called Aspencade through Upper Karr Canyon along the Sunspot Highway to soak in all those golden fall leaves. We hear the Osha Trail is a great hike for fall color as well.
