My Experience with Botox for Migraines

Yes, I got Botox. And yes, it helped my migraines.

Now I’m not a doctor, and of course, you should talk to you own doctor about any medical decision. A doctor can best decide what’s appropriate for you. However, I am a person who knows how terrible it is to struggle with migraines. If my story can help anyone, I’d like to share it so they can discuss it with their own medical practitioner!

After my family and I had Covid in 2022, I had the worst migraines. I was already prone to getting migraines, and mine are usually triggered by hormones. I had a system to maintain the pain through my monthly cycle, but once Covid hit our house, I was out.

I had a migraine every day for a month. I was desperate for relief.

I reached out to my local injector and asked her if Botox could help. She said, “It’s not a given, but we can give it a shot.” (Pun intended).

Did you know that “Botox” relaxes your muscles so they can’t make the expressions they usually make? I had no idea that these toxins relaxed you. Hence, why this helps with migraines. Your muscles can’t tense up and contract.

My Experience with Botox for MigrainesI went in two days later. She suggested receiving an IV drip (wellness+ drip) to help alleviate the migraine and to give my body some extra vitamins to help my lingering Covid symptoms. I then received my Botox. (The word “Botox” is used like the word “Kleenex.” We say it for all tissue even though it’s a brand name. Botox is a brand name, and there are many different types out there). She gave me a Botox alternative called Jeuveau. I prefer this brand over Botox because my body reacts better to this specific toxin.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance, and it feels like little pricks or pinches with each placement of the toxin. To me, it’s the least painful injection you can receive.

The next day I didn’t have a migraine, let alone a headache. The relief I felt was overwhelming, in a good way. I go in every three months to receive my quarterly toxin to help my migraines.

Now, I will say, I do have some triggers like stress and hormones. But, my migraines are not as vicious or frequent. I can function. I’m not debilitated like before.

I do pay out of pocket for my injections, but for me, they are worth the money, and so is my injector. She sat and listened to my concerns and questions. I never feel pressured by her. I only feel cared for and safe.

I know injections are not for everyone. But for me, it’s made a world of difference and helped my quality of life.
